Hi i got a 1996 starcraft 1810 with the 4.3 mercruiser in it. I am having an issue starting the boat after a hot soak. I have a long crank time, No gas dripping down carb, checked all basics. What im wondering is the fuel pump that mounts to the front of the right side cyl head, is that supose to be on with koeo for a few seconds or is it supose to run until the key is turned off? I basically want to know description and operation. a few times, when cycling the key i did not hear it come on but dont know the circuit. If anyone could fill in the gaps that would be awesome! Also, where is a good place to get a service manual for my particular boat? Thanks!

Re: 1996 starcraft 1810 fuel pump/extended hot soak crank

I had the same issue of a hard to start after the engine was warm. My problem was corroded connections in the purple 12 volt line to the coil. While starting the engine the coil voltage would drop to 8.5 volts. I did unplug the purple choke wire and this helped a little before I went through and cleaned all the connections from the key switch back to the coil. I also had to clean the negative cable going from the battery to the engine block.

The pump coming on for 2 seconds and then shutting off, is for the EFI engines only. With the carbed engines, the fuel pump is only energized when the starter is engaged or the oil pressure switch is pressurized when the engine is running.
While you could have vapor lock, unless you are somewhere where the water is hot and the air temp is too right now. I would say no. More likely a carb is leaking the fuel out while sitting.

I have the same boat/engine combo, I ran into a bad fuel pump after about 650 hours of use. Changed pump, now no more problems. Have 830 hours on it now with no more problems. (carbed engine in my case but I think they are all that way in96 with this model)
