1996 four winns sundowner 245. 5.8l fi I purchased the boat and we took it out Saturday. It got hot on me. Did not get hot enough to damage anything. I got it shut off and towed back in. took home and found bad thermostat. replaced and took back out Sunday. First time out it ran up to 42mph. I backed down to be sure thermostat was going to be ok. The rest of the day it would not get over 35mph. Temp stayed right around 170. all gauges read ok. bogs down on take off. Not sure what the specs are for mph. rpm. It also surges idle a few times while sitting. once idle up it is fine.
I also noticed at idle sounded like a valve taping. after further invistigation sound is coming from one side of exhaust. Wondering if flapper could have issues. Just trying to get some input on first route to take. What type of scanner will read codes? Does a regular OBD scanner work on marine engines.

Well I found both exhaust flappers in the exhaust port. Problem solved. I have also found the problem associated with these. Should I worry running without them in the sundowner 245. Any help would be appreciated.

The factory puts them in there for a reason.
Get the hands dirty and reinstall. :)

I am not an expert on SX models but I do know that Volvo stopped using flappers in them at some point around 1999. There were tech bulletins put out regarding how to remove them and plug up the pivot shaft holes in the exhaust pipe for SX models manufactured prior to that point. I do not have these bulletins, but they may be up in the stickies topics. You could also do some searching on this site for that issue and see what advice others have received. I would expect that if a person went into a VP certified dealer and tried to order replacements that they may get the bulletin shown to them first, just sayin'.
