1993 aries with a 96 venom, tach does not work, grey wire from dash to motor ohms good. replaced tach, still no signal, bought boat about 5 months back, tach has never worked, plug with 3 wires is plugged into motor and piggy backed to tachometer at dash from gray wire. tach has power when master switch is flipped on
2nd problem is very little reverse, prop is not locking in fully in reverse, i can take cable loose and hold the shifter in place , it will hold in gear, without me pushing on shifter it does not lock in. foot has been inspected, no wear on gears, shift shaft is at correct height is what iv been told., when shifting into reverse from neutral i go full back on shifter it clinks and barely will turn the prop. it goes into forward and runs great.

A bad/failing voltage regulator will cause issues with the tachometer.

Shift cable worn out or out of adjustment

“So I’ve been told” is a red flag…..trust but verify

Verify the shift rod height.--Post the value you see as removed.------Remove shifter cable ( boat in the water) and see if you get reverse.----Cables do wear out internally.

I have a 1998 Johnny 150HPV6. I have had some issues where the shift rod gets hung up due to corrosion, and will not go down into reverse. The fix is to drop the gearcase and figure out what is jamming the shift rod.

You might like to see if this is your issue. Remove the cowling. Spin the prop (ign off) in neutral while observing the shift linkage under the bottom carbs. Have someone move the shifter into forward, then neutral and then reverse and see how much movement there is.

When my reverse gets jammed, the linkage bends and distorts because it cannot move the shift rod downward.
