I bought a used 1996 740GL PNCS EEM engine for my project sportfisher. Boy was I surprised when I pulled the distributor cap and found no wires going into the distributor at all. No points ? no pickup.

A bit a research and I find that this is an EEM ignition system and that the coil gets it's "firing instruction" from a timing sensor mounted on the flywheel cover, monitoring a timing ring mounted on the crack shaft, under the flywheel cover. The problem is that the flywheel cover on the engine is for an inboard setup and I need it set up for my 290DP-B I/O. I've added a couple of pictures of the 2 flywheel covers and here is a link to the 3 ignition system that were available for the 740GL:

So my questions are:

Do I need to replace the distributor, with one that has a pickup mounted inside? (like the 3rd setup in the above link)
-If yes, would I use the two wires that presently go to the timing sensor and hook 'em up to the new distributor?

Comparing the distributor bodies in the link above , I'm pretty sure that a pickup could be added to the existing distributor.

Any other ideas?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and Thank you for your time,

Are you running a carb? If so, either the delco voyager dizzy or the Mallory YL624AV dizzy

I have the same distributor and have a new Delco Voyager EST ready to drop in. All you need to do is supply switched power to it and add the tach wire and you are set.

Thank you for your replies!

I do have the carburetor version.

I would prefer going with the Delco Voyager EST because it is the entire kit and a breakerless option, but I'm leaning towards the Mallory YL624AV simply because I have a relative that works for a marine supply house, that can get it to me for ~$210.00 new. Unfortunately they don't stock the Delco Voyager EST so I'd be looking at full retail price.

-My next question is to verify that I have understood what I'd need to do: With either of these distributor choices, I would not be using the stock ignition module or any of the stock ignition hardware?

TIA for your help.

That is correct.

No way I would put in a points distributor when the Delco EST is available.
