Hi Guys,

I am totally new to this site, and boating in general. I have an issue with my 1996 Yamaha outboard and was hoping someone could help.

When I first bought the boat a few months ago it ran great. A few weeks ago, I brought it to the shop to get the floors repaired. It was sitting idle for about three weeks.

Anyway, when I went to start it today, a ton of oil and smoke came out of the lower unit (prop specifically). The driveway and prop were covered in a black ink like substance. The boat would start, but only stay on if I had the throttle choke all the way up. Even during this, the motor would sputter and sneeze, and if I released the throttle, it would die.

I took out a spark plug and it was covered in oil. I changed all the plugs, but it is doing the same thing. A buddy told me this was caused from me leaving the engine in the upright position during the time it was in the shop. However, I am very worried and am afraid something major has occurred. Why would the boat run fine just a month ago and than this happens? Any help/advise would be much appreciated!!!

Is this an oil injected 2 stroke?

I don't understand if the motor is able to run with the manual throttle open or the choke open or both...

Likely carb or fuel pump problem.

Have you checked under the transom - if there is an oil bottle about the size of a smaller size truck battery then its an oil injected 2 stroke (cycle you fellas call it) motor and by mixing oil into the fuel you would be running way way to much oil and you might well get the symtoms you describe.

I am not suggesting that you are an idiot, but you have not said that the engine is a pre-mix motor, only that you add oil.

Cheers
