I posted this on the 'Non Repair OB discussion' forum before I saw the Yamaha forum.

This is my first post on iboats and I am a newby to boating.

I am going tomorrow to look at a boat with a 1996 Yamaha ProV 200 OB. It has been run in salt water in Corpus Christi bay most of its life. I have not seen the information sticker on the motor that gives the complete model number so I don't know if this motor is a salt water motor or not.

Is the 1996 Yamaha ProV 200 a salt water motor?

Also, the owner has told me over the phone that there was a water leak producing a small amount of water around one of the spark plug holes. The seep has stopped but I am wondering if this would possibly be a head gasket that is leaking between a water galley and the spark plug hole or if one of the gallies is rusted through producing water at the spark plug hole?

The owner will take me out on the bay to demonstrate the boat. I plan on doing a compression test after we pull the boat and while the motor is warm but I don't think this test will tell me anything to do with the water leak.

Lastly, I know that you are not supposed to run an OB motor without providing water or the impeller will be ruined. If I pull all 6 spark plugs and do the compression test one hole at a time, will I ruin the impeller if the motor is only spinning at the speed of the starter motor?

Thanks for all your help. I know that this forum will be very helpful as I learn more about boating.

I agree with Rodbolt 110%. Run away unless you are buying the boat and the engine is free. If it leaking around the spark plug hole, you are going to open up a huge cans of worms trying to fix it.
