I just purchased a boat with the '97 150 ocean pro on it. Hour meter reads 278. Compression came in at 125-130 range. I'm new to boating, what do these engines like and hate, like for instance, sitting at idle for extended periods, or what RPM ranges should I want to stay in when running, and any to avoid running in? Any and all input would be great, any add ons like temp sensors, etc that are wise to add? Thanks all, hoping to get a few years out of it before blowing it up<br /> Don

dfish....Welcome to the post. 278 hrs. on 97 is very little, most guys do that and many more in a year. Provided that it has been taken care of and maintained properly it should be a good motor to you. The compression readings sound pretty good. As for your RPM range question, that motor will like to run between 5500 and 6000 at WOT, so as long as you can get that with a normal load you can run that engine at whatever RPM you want,4500 all day or WOT all day. If you can't get that out of it right now you may have to re-prop. I believe that engine is a looper so they tend not to like running at trolling speeds for extended periods of time, but if you open it up every now and then you'll be alright. I would say if you take care of it you should get alot more than a few years out of it. I would try to find out when the last time the water pump was changed and when the carbs were rebuilt,if ever. Since that motor obviously hasn't been run all that much you may just want to do this so you know it's been done and you have that peace of mind. Water pump impellers tend to dry out when not used and carbs tend to gum up when not used. Other than this you should be good, good luck with it.
