Hi,

Just wondering what is the best rev range to achieve good fuel economy.
We noramlly go out in moderate seas and for about 50<>60 miles.
It chews a bit of juice, but we normelly go at comfortable speed. Smooth water, we go hard.
Rough water we try to keep it comfortable for all.

I normally get my son to drive and I will relax and then tow the boat home. About 100 miles or so.
I want to try to throttle the boat back a bit to save fuel so I have more range when we get out the reef.
What rev range should I operate in to get the best fuel economy. Should I try to rig a vacumn gauge to drive to a vacumn
in the inlet manifold?

Thanks,
Crash

Crash, Normally the best fuel economy is just when you are solidly on plane. On most boats that is 3200-3600 RPM. Make sure the prop is correct for the boat, and in good condition. See if you can trim the motor up all the way, as the more trim the better fuel economy as well.

On my 21 footer, I can trim the Johnny 150HPV6 all the way, if the water is calm and I am going fairly straight. The boat seems to ride mostly on the flattened keel, in the stern area. If the water is rough or I make a significant turn, the boat falls off "the pad" and the motor will ventilate.
