1997 200 warped carb bowl - please help!

I am rebuilding my carbs. I have discovered that they had already been rebuilt recently (looks like the same exact rebuild kit as I have), but since I already bought the new carb kits, I thought I would go ahead and put the new parts in. Here is the problem: the previous person torqued the bowl screws very tight, and the bowl gasket being a tad thicker than my new kit's gasket, causing slight warping between each screw. In other words the screw areas are pulled down closer and flattens the gasket more leaving the areas between the screws less flattened and more of a gap. Now my new kit has a slightly thinner gasket. The area I am concerned about is the area around the main fuel entry. I have 2 questions:

1) Is there a way to leak test the sealing of the bowl with compressed air? Is the bowl area under pressure when running on the engine?

2) Is there somewhere I can get a thicker gasket for a decent price if it does leak?

I may just put the old ones back on, but it seems they might leak since they are already "molded in".

Please advise. Thanks all!

Where did you get the carb repair kits ? You may want to try OEM kits. Could be the float bowls are warped and need re-surfacing.

Do figure 8's on a sheet of fine wet and dry to level them again.

To test, put some hose on the feed nipple and blow through the hose as you tighten the screws.(hold the carb upside down to close the jet).
Or just pressurize the system with the fuel bulb and watch for bowls getting wet.

With my bowls design you really can't sand because there is a "sealing ridge" on the surface of the float bowl flange and that would get sanded off. I keep reading on this site that there is a place you can get metal bowls but no one has been able to say where these are available as of today. thanks.

Maybe you could just use 2 gaskets to double the thickness sufficient to make up for the warpage?...

doubling up the gaskets will seal it right and is a great idea, which I just tried. But...

Since the bowl will be 1/16" lower than normal (due to the thickness of the extra gasket) will this affect how the carb works?

Clifton63, No one makes a metal bowl for the 90? looper V-4 & 6's and I think doubling the gaskets will increase chances of air/fuel leaks. Just get a new bowl as they are $26 from boats.net.

do you have a part number? It shows "obsolete" on boats.net. e200txeua for 1997

Is there pressure in the fuel bowl?

In the end, I decided to put the old gaskets back on since they were a tad thicker than the new ones and in good shape. I now have 1 questionable carb which was warped more than others. I think it is sealed but barely.

Your right, they are available. I could have sworn they showed "obsolete". The carb body shows that. I need 6. Will 99 carbs work on a 97? The part numbers are different. but throttle plates the same.
