1997 30 HP Johnson impeller replacement

Have recently bought two motors throught sealed bid. Am trying to put new impeller in 1997 Johnson 30 hp and can't get the lower unit to drop off after unbolting. The rod going up to the shifter is holding me. How do you release the rod so the lower unit will drop on off so I can get to the impeller?

Take off the water pick up screens on the gearcase and you will see the coupler .Separate the two nuts and then remove the little nylon bushing under the top nut to pull it off.Carefull not to break that bushing as that happens often.Go to confession and then get ready to do more swearing when you try and get that bushing back on.
