Model 40ELPTO, Serial 0G494843
Motor is like new with incredibly low hours on it (less than 50).
I purchased it from a dealer recently as it was traded in on a Honda 50. I converted it from a tiller handle to remote, rigged it onto my Boston Whaler, and initially it ran OK without any problems (a few hours).
It began acting up. Intermittently not starting, or cutting out. Initially I was convinced it was a fuel related problem, but the carb is spotless, and I am getting plenty of clean fuel.
On the weekend the engine failed again, and completely died from near WOT. It would not restart.
Its not the fuel, or the ignition switch. I checked the stator, and the resistance looks correct at .6 OHMS.
What is the best way to diagnose this critical failure so I can make my motor reliable?
Its intermittent, and there are only a few more things left to check. These motors are pretty simple. I just don't want to replace anything expensive that doesn't need replacing (and still have the symptom).
Thanks in advance for any input.

When the motor dies is the primer bulb still hard? Have you checked your compression and your fuel pump? If your diaphram in the fuel filter is pitted or stretched you can get some screwey results. How do your plugs look?

Have you checked the main electrical connection at the engine? Often times the pins are pinched together and will intermittantly loses connection and causes the condition you describe. Pull the connector apart and gently spread the slotted pins apart and reconnect. Also be sure that there is not an excessive amount of di-electric grease in the connector as that con have an adverse effect on the connection. Hope this helps!

I spread the pins and took the motor out for a trial.
I could NOT get it to fail. Hopefully I'm in luck.
A 3 hour run, most of which was at 5000+ RPM.
Thanks.
