I recently purchased a Tracker with a 40 hp Force by Mercury on it. It started running on low power, so i changed the plugs, and it did the same. I discovered that the top cylinder ( a 2 cylinder motor ) plug is not firing all of the time. What is the first thing to replace?

also , it will not start period now. I removed one of the two boxs that send wires out to the spark wire assemblies and tried to start it. i checked for blown fuses and found none. i replaced the box ( possibly a cd unit?) It will not turn over or anything. the battery is good because it still runs the instruments.

I guess that I will answer my own question. There was a shorted wire on the CD unit that was causing the top cylinder not to fire. The mechanic also said that there was a defect from the factory that causes backwash of gas from the primer bulb and lets air into the gas line, so he going to fix this with a valve on the line. He said that this can cause the motor to run kind of weird. And just for facts on the Force 1997 model a common electrical problem is the stator. If the stator is black, it might be a factory recall. mine was one of the red updated versions, so it was okay. He also recommended using only NGK spark plugs in these motors. Thanks a lot for all of the good advice I hoped for...... ;)

My advice for the novice is to spend the extra money and take your boat to a professional instead of getting advice from computer nerds that will not answer your question with a straight answer and spend half of the screen with some dumb saying, and you still have the problem.

Agreed. Also, this fella solved the problem by going the way anyone would have suggested had the question been well defined.
