1997 75 hp Merc Running

I have a 97 Merc 75 hp that has had very little use approx 20 hours . Took it out for the first time this year and started it but it will not idle and when shifting into gear it quits, to keep the motor running I have to keep on fast idle for the motor to run at all . Changed the plugs and it still would not stay running. Any simple suggestions on how to trouble shoot this problem would be appreciated before I take it to be looked at.<br /><br />Thanks<br />Bill G

Look for some type of fuel restriction.Is tank vent open?Clogged fuel filter or obstruction in fuel line.Too rich a mixture?<br />Check the fuel hose.Is it connected properly with the primer bulb nearest the gas tank?Does the bulb get firm?

Thanks reel for the quick reply I will check on these things tomorrow. Any easy way to check to make sure this is not a spark problem other than changing the plugs which I have done already? One other thing I forgot to mention is that the motor smoked alot when i was able to keep it going .<br /><br />Bill G
