OK, I'm at wits end.
I have a 1997 9.9 that has no water coming from the telltale.
I have pulled the lower unit and replaced the gasket, wear plate and impeller (which looked almost brand new - no chunks missing and the arms were still flexible.
While I had the lower unit pulled, I ran some weed-whacker line up the long water tube that goes up into the power head. Did not appear to have any obstructions. I also ran the line into the tell tale, the short distance it ran from the underside of the cowl to what appears to be a thermostat?
I installed a new impeller, oriented in the same direction that the old one was in (although this was a newly purchased used motor, and I haven't had any water flow since I bought it.)
Could there possibly be an obstruction in the power head cooling channels themselves?
I'm also considering the fact that the old impeller, looking like it was newly installed, perhaps it was installed backwards by the previous owner and I installed it incorrectly also?
Any other ideas?
I plan on pulling the lower unit again and reversing the impeller to see if that fixes the problem.
Also, after I put everything back together and put the muffs on to check it, when the unit fired up, it was running much faster than an idle speed. Throttle was barely in forward. Almost sounded like the engine was going to over rev before I hit the kill switch.
