1997 evinrude 50 hp spl hot alarm coming on

Went to the lake yesterday 3rd weekend in a row(3x total). We left the boat ramp and all was well made about a 2 mile run WOT caught bait made another 2 mile run WOT back to where we were gonna fish after fishing for about 2hrs using trolling motor only, cranked the boat up in 55 degree water and after about 5 minutes the alarm came on saying it was hot. What could be the problem? This engine has never done this, I got some water on top of the engine cover right before this happened. Checked the thermostat and it worked. Is there a way to check that the temp sensor is working correctly?

And you last replaced the water pump when? Test the sensor by grounding the brown wire.

I went to replace the impeller today and when I got it apart the impeller was in perfect condition, not a crack and not hard. Going to go ahead and replace it anyway, at least make my work worth something. By grounding the brown wire what will this tell me? I know the alarm is working, as it comes on with a light that says temp. When I turn the switch on it also sounds the alarm for 1 second then cycles through all the lights then they go off like they are supposed to.

How was the impeller housing? Any scores or wear?

How is the flow from the tell tale? Did you flush the cooling system while the lu was down and the t stats out to ensure proper water flow? Clean out water intake area. Is the motor in fact overheating? Can you leave your hand on the block for a 1, 2, 3 count? Do you have access to an infrared thermometer?

Also you are positive it is the overheat and not fuel restriction warning? Will easing off the throttle or pumping the fuel primer bulb cause the buzzer to stop?

It definetly lit up the temp light. How do I go about flushing it out. The LU is still off as is the thermo.(got to cool and windy LOL) Could the temp switch actually be bad and saying it is hot when its not if so how do you test it
