I have a 1997 Evinrude intruder 150 that won’t go WOT. At full trim I can get about 4800 rpm. Hole shot is perfect and I can run at 4800 rpm with no bogging. I’ve replaced stator, optical sensor, power pack, ignition switch, spark plugs. The only thing that hasn’t been replaced is the plug wires which tested good and rectifier. I’ve cleaned the carbs and put new gaskets and replaced 3 of the 6 plastic carb bowls with no difference. Installed a non oiling fuel pump rated from 150-225 hp. I’ve adjusted the motor height all throughout the jack plate and the was no change. I’ve checked compression cold and hot with 120 +/- 10 psi throughout all 6. I’ve checked the fuel tank suction and engine filter. Prop is a Raker 24p. If anyone has any ideas I’d greatly appreciate it.

The raker has those vent holes.----That allows engine to build up revs for good acceleration.-------Instead of throwing parts at it , spend some coins to have the engine evaluated on a marine dynamometer.-----If motor is putting out the proper rated power your prop has too much pitch !!

I’ve called a mechanic and they said they weren’t taking anything at the moment. I’ve also tried putting a 23p 4 blade renegade on it with the same thing.

Have you tested timing with tester? make sure the high speed jets was installed or not loose?

I haven’t checked the timing with the timing light. I did at some point think it was a timing issue. From my understanding the timing is all done by the power pack and optical sensor. I have a hot foot and about the last inch of throttle it feel like it cuts back a little bit. There’s really no adjustment to the timing I can see other than the timer base on the throttle linkage which I’ve adjusted low and high. I don’t know how many degrees each notch adjust. I just can’t find any research out there about the timing of these engines other than 6° at idle and 20° at WOT.

If the high speed jets weren’t transferred over to the new carb bowl. Would that be the culprit? How do they affect WOT?

If that is what happened you have the smoking gun.----Float bowls need the fuel metering jet !

So today when I took the spark plugs out to do another compression test I noticed that 2 plugs were a different color that the others (they’re only a week old) and the ones that were a different color was the ones without the jets. Luckily I kept the old bowls and just installed the jets. I bought the boat a little over a month ago. My initial problem was the stator low voltage after it got up to operating temp. It kept stalling. I just can’t remember if I was able to get full WOT before I changed the carb bowls. That was the first thing I did.

It was the high speed jets in case anybody runs into the issue where the bowl needs replacement. Make sure to swap the jets over to the new one.
