1997 Mariner150 - Smoke from engine Cowl

When the boat is at Idle speed in the water, I notice exhaust smoke coming out the Cowl on the side closest to the boat. I have done a search and came up with minimal results. Has anyone experienced this or is this normal of a 2 stroke? I picked up this boat a few weeks ago so i'm not sure if it's something that will require attention or not. The engine idles and runs strong otherwise. Thanks for any input.

-leaking base gasket or
-leak at upper motor mounts

if its actually coming from inside the cowl, idle quality will eventually suffer, especially after a hard run.

I'll check that this weekend. I guess the best way will be runnin with the engine cover off. Hopefully I can see where it's coming from.
