Do you have power steering? If you do, there is a cooler, if you don't, no cooler.

Follow the water intake hose from the transom shield to the engine. The cooler is located on the back of the engine "I think"
Another method would be to follow the hoses from the power steering pump. One goes to the cylinder on the transom shield, the other goes to the cooler.

PS: here is a link to the online Mercruiser manual.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/13/13covr2.pdf
Look in section 1B for how to drain it.

Should it have water in it?

You see I'm a prime example of your motto at the bottom of your post I allready winterized it drained all water and filled with antifreeze tarped it and it's put away for the winter now its been 5-10below all week and I'm a little scared the cooler has frozen whats your advice?

Thanks,
Skipper

Re: 1997 Merc 4cyl

If it's been 5-10°C below zero all week, it doesn't matter anymore. It's already broke if it's going to break. Might as well forget about it till spring.
Hopefully when you drained the rest of the engine you pulled a hose that was connected to the cooler and allowed the water to drop below the coolers lowest point. If there was only water in the hose, the expansion wouldn't hurt anything as the hose would take the expansion.

A new one from Mercruiser lists for a little over $190.
If it just popped the end off (what normally happens), just solder it back on. Pressure check both the oil and the water sides, and if there are no leaks, you should be ok.
