Hi all,

I have a 1997 SeaRay Bowrider175 with an inboard/outboard mercruiser alpha 1 gen 2 motor

Boat has always had a rough idle until fully warmed up (even on a hot day). This year that problem has worsened and the engine really doesnt even hold idle anymore. Then motor just dies if I'm not throttled up to at least 2,000rpm in neutral. If I come off throttle, feels like it runs out of gas and dies.

After doing as much carb adjustment as possible, it really didnt resolve the idle issue. Did some reading and it was suggested anti-siphon valve was the culprit. So, I replaced with new ASV. For a brief moment after anti siphon valve was replaced, it ran like a new boat. EUREKA!!! Idle problem was fuel system related and I THOUGHT I solved the problem.... I was wrong

After about 45 seconds, the motor choked like running out of gas. Fired up the boat, and back to the old symptoms of rough idle were back :( This seems to have isolated to fuel-system related issues, but replacing the ASV was not the solution. So then I turned to my fuel pump. Pulled the fuel filter, replaced with new one and fired up the boat. Again....for a brief moment after fuel filter was replaced, it ran like a new boat! Same as last time, the motor was runing great at idle for about 45 seconds, and then choked.

I'm feeling fairly confident the problem is NOT my fuel pump and more than likely carb related. I would love to hear input from any of the veterans here and how you would approach this rough idle problem. Thanks so much! Be safe

A carburetor has a bunch of small passageways to insert fuel into the passing air at different throttle settings. All it takes i s a little crud, or a little water which creates crud, and those passageways get clogged. Your carb needs rebuilding. Get a kit, get a can or two of carburetor cleaner. A can of compressed air if you don't have a compressor. Follow the Mercruiser manual and rebuild the thing making sure every passageway and part is perfectly clean and open. ALso dump your fuel water separator into a clear container and see if there is anything in there except clean gas. Then replace the filter - don't reuse.
