This boat has a Mercury Sport Jet 175Xr2 motor ser number 0e272394. I purchased this boat used about six months ago and it seem to run fine at the time but it has been sitting sinse purchase.

The gas cap had broken an I suspected water had entered the tank, I used the gas treatment and topped the tank off with fresh gas.

The motor turns over, although it doesnt seem to have spark (although I havent checked for spark, do I need a special tool for these strange looking plugs?). The spark plugs when removed look wet so I believe it is getting gas. I also tried using starter fluid.

How do I check for spark? If I dont have spark, how do I test the components? Any help is much apprecated. This is my first boat, and would love to get it wet...

Thanks
Kevin

ok first can u tell if its getting water or gas cause it sounds like it might be alot of water, but to check the spark u get a floesent light tube and some allagator clip wires( wire with clips on either end sold at radio shack) u hook one wire from the plug wire to one end of the buld and another wire from the bulb to the plug then turn it over and watch the bulb light up.
there are easier ways im sure but this is fun and a lil safer.

do u know bout the compression of the motor?
what kinda shape do the plugs look like they are in?
but if ur getting gas and not water chances are its either the plugs, plug wires, coils, or some wire that came loose.
if it were my boat id drain the gas and put in fresh cause alot of water in a cylnder can cause trouble. so drain refil and try to start if it dont work then look around for other problems. and keep us posted

srry bout the bad spelling and stuff i just woke up lol

kevin,

you may want to take the carburater off and clean it and you should change that can of gas all together. and to test for spark you take the plug off and hook it up to the spark plug wire (make sure you mark the wire to the same cylinder)
and touch the metal part of the spark plug to any part of the head and try sparting the engine if all the electrical is ok, you will see the spark on the plug where it sparks. hope this helps
