I'm looking at buying a boat that supposedly has a 1997 15 HP Yamaha outboard, but has a cover that says 9.9.. Whats an easy way to tell the difference between the two? Is there anything that I should look for as far as maintenance, wear before I buy it?
<br /><br />Get the model number and let us know, that will tell.<br /><br />The 9.9 bonnet fits the 15 very well, and vice versa. <br /><br />In areas where many lakes ban engines over 10hp it is quite common to find 9.9 bonnets, or decals, on 15hp engines of several makes.<br /><br />In the real world there is little difference in performance between most 9.9s and their 15hp sisters.
