Hi all,
I was able to get the upper & lower shift rods to connect, unfortunately i can only get neutral at the propshaft or the prop shaft is locked -won't turn either way.. The shift rod on the lower unit will only turn about 1/4 of a turn in either direction. How do I line up both upper & lower shift rods to be in the same gear? This engine has a cam-shift unit not an EZ Shift unit. According to the manual the engine was placed in forward gear when the lower unit was removed. Help-my back is killing me. Sullymate

You're gonna have to pull the lower unit off again and shift the lower shaft until it is in neutral or forward gear... Then match up the throttle/upper shift shaft, then re-ingage...

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter what gear everything is in, or even in neutral, just as long as both are obviously the same...
Good luck.

I kinda prefer to put these units in reverse while removing and installing. The cam units are spring loaded to fwd so the cam could be on the other side of the world and you would still have fwd but there is only one detent for rev.I would pull the lower unit off and put the control in reverse .Now get a 1/4 drive 6pt 11/32 socket(I believe). It should fit over the shift rod nicely.Next turn the shift rod counter clockwise until you feel it click(this should be neutral),continue to turn to next click(this should be rev)verify it is in rev by spinning the drive shaft clockwise(rotation of motor) and the prop should spin backward. Now go and install lower unit making sure the shift rod doesn't spin when mating parts. Good Luck :)
