Using a volt meter Im only getting 11.8 volts at the batery terminal with the motor running. The 112 HP Spl only puts out 6 amp ,the 115 HP puts out 12 Amps(Im told) Do you think thr regulater is bad??? Thanks

try cleaning your battery cables at both ends.

Frank, With the motor running, check the DC voltage at the red wire connected from the VR to the Starter Solenoid. If you have <12VDC there, disconnect the VR from the yellow stator wires and check for continuity (motor not running) across the two yellow wires. There should be continuity, but no continuity to ground. Check the purple wire for +12V at the VR, with the ignition key on. This voltage controls the VR output. if it doesn't have battery voltage, figure out why.

Now start the motor and check for AC voltage across the two yellow wires. Start on a high AC Scale, so you don't blow the meter. if you have AC voltage, the regulator is likely bad.

It's not supposed to go to 0 when the key is turned off. It is supposed to go to 0 when you turn the key back on. Does it operate notmally when the motor is running? If it doesn't operate normally then the rectifier may be suspect.

There isn't a 97 112 but that doesn't matter. If you have the 6 amp charging system you'll probably have the small round rectifier. If you have the 3/9 system you'll have the water cooled rectifier / regulator.
