1998 200 HP oil injection

I just bought a boat with a '98 200 hp SW Series II and the oil injection is not connected. The previous owner said he had problems with it and no longer trusted it; and just mixes the oil in the fuel. The boat has a 75 gallon gas tank so it is a little bit of guess work when filling it.

My question is, is it worth it to repair the oil injection or are these early systems that unreliable? The motor does run real well.

The Yamaha system is the most bullet proof system built. Premixing fuel causes excessive coking of the cylinders since you are mixing 50/1 and that is for high speed running and way to rich for low speeds. It sure makes life simplier with the system working.

It depends on what is broken on the oil injection. I have never seen a Yamaha oil injection pump fail except for two reasons. 1. The pump got soaked in salt water and froze. 2. The bronze gear on the crankshaft got mauled, usually because a pump froze.

If it is the crank gear, it could get expensive, because you need to rebuild the engine as you are taking the crank out.

If the problem is not with the injector pump, then it is with the oil tank supply. Usually this is a problem caused when the electric motor on the oil tank seizes. Usually caused by being in a damp, salty environment.

You need to determine why the system does not work.

I can take you through it step by step, but I will need to know exactly what you have done.

Thanks guys! I have the SELOC book and it seems to be pretty comprehensive with regards to the system and troubleshooting it. If I get stuck along the way, I'll certainly be here looking for help.
