My 1998 Larson SEI 186 Volvo 3.0 stalls leaving the dock if not warmed up to at least 100 deg. Even then it can stall more, and be hard to re-start - must crank lots with WOT. Once underway it sometimes will totally bog down to 2000 rpm or so even with throttle opened way up. And if you pull back the throttle then it will stall. Its doesn't do this all the time, but does seem to be increasing in frequency. Can anyone suggest what I need to fix this spring to make it better? If this is a fuel filter problem - I dont know location(s) & how to change so need direction pls....

Also, I read about folks with the 3.0 who go over 40mph - but I only get 37 by myself at 4600 rpm. Prop is newer 14.5 X 19 X 4 blade. Are they lying or shud I get more speed if so how?

History - new manifold, shaved head, full tune up plugs wires, cap, rotor 4 years ago (dealer sold to me w/cracked manifold....gee thx); rebuilt carb 2 years ago to fix chronic hot flooding.

Thanks so much for any help.

Ayuh,... Tune Ups, 'n Fuel Filters are a small part of Annual maintenance....

My guess is, the carb is probably full of Crud Again, 'n needs to be rebuilt Again....

Have you checked to see if the choke is working correctly?
After you get the carb rebuilt, and the fuel pump filters changed again, I would suggest you install a water separating fuel filter. This will prevent water from getting to the fuel pump and carb. A real problem with todays Efuels. You also need check your fuel tank for water. The filters you now have will allow water into the carb.
The first thing you need to do is get the engine running right and consistently before you start worrying about which prop you need.

The engine is not the sole variable in the speed equation...the prop, the hull, and weight are a few other important variables in the equation that you need to consider.

37 mph vs over 40 mph.... They may be rideing alone on glass smooth water. you on the other hand may be loaded down with fuel, fishing gear, a big cooler full of ice, and a half a dozen bikini clad deck hands, cutting through a 16 inch chop against the tide and wind.......

4 blade props are for pulling try switching to a 3 blade 14x21 for more speed.. but just depends on the application.. also, check your timing and advance, mine was a couple degrees off and also the carb was nasty and idle screw was off... , little popping and bogging when cold, but after warming up ran great...

Hi Don. 3 more questions if you dont mind...

1. How do you check the fuel tank for water? Do you have to take it right out?
2. Is replacing the Volvo fuel filter the same procedure as the merc in thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=325287&page=1
3. Other threads say this problem can be caused by clogged fuel pick up hose filter. Can you describe how to get at that part and change or clean?

I'll check into the water separator. Thanks for the help

Ayuh,... Unscrew the Elbow outlet of the tank, the diptube comes out with it....
