Model 75ELPTO Ser# OG739501. I have ordered some repair manuals from Seloc but they won't be here for several days so thought I might get some quick scoop from some of the the "good ole boys" and maybe gals :)who have been there and done that. My 1998, 75HP 2-stroke merc, 3 cylinder with power/trim/tilt etc, starts right up but runs and idles rough. Compression is 130 psi on all cylinders. Merc shifts in and out of gear ok and pumps water good. One mechanic told me his best quess was that it might need new main crankshaft and connecting rod bearings. Probably a dumb question but is there a way to determine if it needs new bearings without tearing it down? How hard would it be for a do it yourselfer/rookie to replace the bearings if this is the cause of trouble, as I would like to repair it myself if possible?<br />Thanks :)

The manuals that were suggested from this forum where out of stock, so I went to Amazon to get. When they get here I will probably find most of what I need to know from them, and then again maybe not. Books are great but nothing beats experiance and it looks like there is plenty of that around here.

If it needs new bearings is it better to replace the whole upper unit with a rebuilt/used one as apposed to just changing out the bearings individually?
