1998 9.9 honda

I just found this forum tonight. I hope this post is ok. I am thinking about buying a used 9.9 electric start long shaft from a pawn shop for $925.00. I noticed 2 things about it that I was not sure about. First there is some kind of sealant between the powerhead housing and the housing below it. Is that the way it came from the factory. Second, there is black oily stuff around the exaust port. Is that normal? Is this a good deal? What should I look for on this motor to see if it is ok? I have a 1985 10 and I was looking to upgrade.

I have a Honda 15hp that has at least a 1000 hours on it and there is no black oily stuff around the exhaust and there should not be sealant where the powerhead blots up to the lower unit. Sound like somebody is out to dump a piece of junk. Just my feeling from your description!

I am with gas036 on this one, the sealant on there tells me some one was into it and did not put it back togther right. And a 4 stroke should not have any black oily stuff around the exhaust.
