I have a 1998 90hp Force Outboard that has just began to start hard. I changed the bulb and gas line(after-market). When starting the outboard, it will start easily, but quit immediately. It takes many attempts and alot of bulb compressing to get it going. Once its running and in gear, it doesn't misfire, run rough, and has no power loss and any speed. What's wrong? Thanks.

Does the primer bulb hold the fuel after pumping or does it drain out? Sounds like a fuel pump problem and you may need to open it back up and make sure all is in its proper place. Diaphragm needs to be put in correctly or it will malfunction. Also check the carb floats and make sure they are not stuck in the closed position. The primer bulb should stay full of fuel after prim. Could be the check valve in the bulb itself is bad. I went through two of those things that were from walmart cause neither one would hold fuel and causing the same problems your having. Spend the extra $ and get the right one its worth it. Go back through fuel lines from tank pick up to the carbs and make sure all are fit well and not loose are kinked.

The primer bulb did seem to stay firm throughout the starting problem. A few moths ago, before this problem, every-time I started the boat after the initial start and warm-up, it would start, make a minor backfire and quit. It would only quit once and start right up again without any problem. Now, it doesn't produce the minor backfire, it just starts and quits repeatedly. I'm not sure if the constant pumping of the bulb helps to eventually start the motor or the problem isn't bad enough yet to prevent the motor from starting at all. Thanks.

Hi Steven. Welcome to Iboats.

I would be inclined to give the motor a quick once over and give it a service if it hasn't had one recently. When I first bought my boat I had an intermittent poblem with it dying at idle. it turned out to be a combination of things. Fuel pump, fuel breather line fitted incorrectly and idle speed too low. I eventually found these by eliminating other possible causes by following the service procedure. Compression, spark ,fuel.

start with the fuel pump rebuild kit and while you are at it replace the float needles if not done yet. They are rubber tipped and our lovely ethanol enriched fuel will do numbers on anything rubber including fuel lines and anything rubber that it makes contact with. I am not sure if you have an inboard tank but those anti syphon valve barb fittings can act really stupid sometimes. good luck
