I'm looking for validation, I think i figured it out but I wanted to see if anyone could check my work.
Problem: while motoring at just above idle the boat sputtered and quit. Wouldn't restart, cranked over fine. Smelled fuel after multiple tries.
I use the boat almost every week, I just returned from camping and it got used a bunch over that weekend. Turning it over in the driveway it sneezed once, barely. No spark using a spark tester.
I checked for fuel at the carbs. Looks good. Battery is good no corrosion anywhere. Fuel is good, I use a portable tank and burn off any i have left in the tank after a month (dump it in my Jeep). I have tested the control box, ignition switch and kill switch wiring, all checks out. I got a Factory service manual and spent a bunch of time reading here as well. All signs point to a cdi or pulser or exciter coil failure. When testing following the FSM instructions, the exciter coil passed with resistance right in the middle of the acceptable range. The pulser coil failed the resistance check on 2/3 of the leads. (it is a 4 wire device) I did not check the CDI because it started raining.
I am going to see if I can get a new pulser coil before this weekend. I'd really like to get back on the water. What concerns me is that I have read that the pulser coils don't fail very often. Any suggestions before I spend ~$140
