I have a 1998 Caravelle with the Volvo Penta 4.3GL PBYC. The model number is 4110165886. This engine has been great until this year, I have already replaced the fuel pump and now I see the fuel dumping into carb. Problem started when I first stated messing with it as the carb was getting no fuel and the engine would kick every time I sprayed carb cleaner in it, just would not stay running. Noticed that no fuel was going into carb so to expatiate things I just figured to replace fuel pump. Now it pumps fuel into carb at first switch of ignition key and when I'm cranking it. She floods herself out every time as the compression gets harder to crank due to fuel in the pistons. What am I missing to get this started, before I changed fuel pump she wanted to start, now she sounds like its just cranking and dumping fuel. Please Help?

Who is the seller, and what is the part number of the fuel pump you installed?

Looks like you went to an auto parts store and bought a high pressure fuel pump.
Won't work, you need one with less than 7 psi output and marine rated.

Just switched it back to old pump and she runs but starving of fuel. Know a place where I can get a pump?

Why do you think you have to replace the pump? A lot of other things can cause that problem.

Re: 1998 Caravelle

When I have it running and barely, she will try and idle better when I spray in carb. That tells me the pump is not working, with the other pump on I could see the gas pouring in when I turned the key and cranked, so I suppose all the wiring to it is working? Am I wrong? You have quite a reputation on this forum and I am all ears. I would never worry being stuck on the lake when boating if I had your knowledge.

It could mean the idle jets are all plugged up.
Have you done a pressure check on the pump.
Have you changed the fuel filter and check the contents of the old filter.
Water will cause your problem if the carb is full of it.
Could even be the screen on the inlet of the fuel pump. Did you look at that when the pump was off? Volvo did have some issues with paint peeling off the filter housing and plugging the inlet screen in the pump.

How do you determine if the jets are plugged up? If so how do you unclog them?
This sounds terrible, but where would the filter be, I have not located that as I thought it would be where the line enters the carb, but not there. At the end of last season the carb was running bad as it would not idle without being on the throttle.
I have checked and cleaned screen when pump was out, looked fine.
