Hi All,

I have a 1998 Evinrude 115 Ocean Pro was recently acquired on a Sunbird 190BR boat. Been loving it so far.

Over the last couple weeks I've done a little work to it to get it into top shape. The VRO was pumping too much oil so rather than dealing with that I replaced it with a MasterTech Fuel pump and now premix. I also replaced all 4 carburetor bowls because fuel was leaking out of them due to cracks and warpage.

Had the boat out all last week with no problems. Would run around 5500 RPM, boat up on a plane no problem.

Fast forward to Saturday afternoon... running across the lake wide open and all the sudden the motor started skipping a little. Maybe once every 5-7 seconds. The longer we ran, the more it did it. Since it was a new boat to us, we thought maybe the fuel gauge was wrong and we were running out of fuel. Got a few more gallons of fuel and tried again. Same problem. I could run at 3000 RPM all day long, any higher than that, it starts skipping, as if the key was turned off for 1/2 seconds at a time, and then 1 second, and then 2 seconds, until bringing it back down under 3000.

My brain tells me it's a fuel problem, but I don't see how since the bulb is full, and makes no difference if someone pumps it while going along. What's frustrating is that it's "Intermittent", only happening over 3K, and came out of nowhere.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Check the magnet on the gearcase drain plug.-----This could be a lower unit issue.------Or run with a timing light to see if one of the cylinders is losing spark.-----You have replaced the water pump impeller right after you bought this boat I hope.

If it were the gearcase, wouldn't the engine rev rather than die down? I plan on replacing the impeller in the Spring.

Alternatively:

If fuel in tank is contaminated, adding fresh fuel won't solve the problem. If it's water, it will be in the bottom of the tank and will slosh around as the level changes (when the boat comes on and off plane, for example). The pickup is in the bottom of the tank.
