I have a 1998 Evinrude 115 SPL Crossflow on a 99' Larson that I've been having some issues with my starter.
This last week, I spent some time up at the lake and on my first day, I noticed that occasionally, when I turned the key, the bendex wouldn't engage the flywheel; it would just spin. I chalked this up to dirty connections and figured I could at least get through the week by just having to turn the key a few more times to get it started.
Then, yesterday, I tried to start it and it was doing the same thing; but this time, when it did actually engage the flywheel, it wouldn't turn it. I thought maybe my battery was weak, so I tried jumping it with my trolling motor battery (which was fully charged) and still had the same issue. I wasn't able to get it started that day and had to limp it back to the landing with my trolling motor where I loaded it up and ready to store it for next weekend.
I know the engine isn't seized up or anything because I was able to turn it with my hands.
I wasn't able to clean the connections and I know this is my first step. The problem is that the boat is 2-hours away and I'm expected to bring it out this weekend for the in-laws, so I would like to be able to at least prepare for everything so I can go up there and fix the problem.
Any insights you folks can give me on this issue?
Thanks!
