Can any body help with this? do I have to drope the lower unit againe? Or can I just turn the shift shaft?

If the shifter handle and the lower unit shift shaft are both in the same gear when you re-assemble, it should index the two correctly.

Some guys wiil put them both in reverse, some guys put them both in forward. It may help to put a piece of scotch tape on the shift shaft to hold it in place while installing the lower unit.

I read that the shifft shaft and shifter handle must be the same the first time and it did not index. Then I tried about ten different ways all with similar results . Tried the tape did not work. 1998 90 horse

You are going to have to drop the lower unit again. If it is similar to my 120. I had the same problem. If you are careful you can shift the lower unit between the gears. I ended up having to put it into neutral to get it to work. It may take several tries. I found the problem with it in forward was there was too much play. Good luck.
