miket,<br /><br />SPL means "special". V-4 is the configration of the cylinder, as in one half of a V-8.<br /><br />The SPL line was OMC's value line, of outboards. They were the older "crossflow" technology, in the V-4 class, and were marketed against Force engines by Mercury.<br /><br />They were identical to the other V-4 crossflows in the line except some them did not have power tilt and oil injection as standard equipment.<br /><br />The V-4 crossflow OMC's were some of the most durable engines ever built.
