A friend of mine has the above mentioned motor and it starts fine idles a little rough however it revs up very strong. He took it out and couldn't get no more than 3,000 rpms out of it while in gear, it just sounded like it was struggling. I took a look at it and checked a couple of quick things like firing and the throttle linkage and the # 6 plug wasn't firing and as the # 3 was unplugged it killed the motor. Does this sound like a power pack prob or maybe the timer base sensor? The coils were swapped and changed but same thing.

so you put a known good coil in place of the cylinder that is not firing and it does not fire either..I would suspect power pack then, though usually you lose a whole bank of cylinders not just one. Make sure your ground is bright and tight on the coils. Test the orange wire going to coil with DVA adapter. you need to test your stator, power pack and timing base..you will need a multi meter and a DVA adapter and a spark gap tester. look your parts up on CDI electronics web site and download the install sheet, this has the test process for each part. Or just guess at it and start changing parts..I would start with the power pack, then go to stator..probably one of these, you will also need to test or replace regulator/rectifier as a bad one of these can ruin your stator and or power pack.

Yes thanks, will have to do some more testing and may I mention that all the electronics are original besides one coil which was replaced a year ago.

The best thing to do first is to get an OMC factory service manual and go from there. Stay away from Seloc or Clymer.

Thanks, I will advise him to get one for his motor because I have for mine and it is OMC factory.
