1998 johnson " 225 venom "

225 runs great til you stop & fish , boat starts but dies when engaging in gear , revs fine in neutral , start it sometimes 30 or 40 times before it decides it wants to run in gear for me. boat is in shop right now , mechanic said 225 is notorious for burning up power packs , said that might problem . mechanic was very sharp & not informative at all but in east tennessee you don't have much choice. thanks for any reply. jonr@erwinutilities.com

Hummm.....the 225's eat packs but the 200's and 250's dont? Wonder why? Same electrical.....<br /><br />Seriously, I understand your concern. If we assume the carbs are clean and the motor is basically healthy I'd perhaps look at the shift interrupter. If its out of adjustment it can cause all kinds of problems. If it idles fine and then drops spark on the starboard bank when you try to shift it, it may do just as you describe.

If you ever are near the Nashville area, check out Riverside Marine. The mechanics there are good, trained, and do not give untrue excuses like "225's eat packs".
