I have read from different people on this forum and just want to make sure I am doing the right job. Is there a screw holding the top of the gear shaft? Do I remove starter to get to the screw? What is the best way to get to it? Should I have the gear to Forward, Reverse or Neutral? Any Tips?

Gear position does NOT matter at all.---Follow these steps in exact order.-------You need to remove the black plastic water intake screens.---Then uncouple the shift rod found there.----Then clean paint off upper shift rod if never done.--Slide the upper nut up and remove that tapered / split black plastic piece on the shift rod.------Lower unit will now come off.

Okay I was able to disconnect it. Tap the nut up and then I was able to see the plastic tapper. Is there a need to place the taper again?

 Okay, I got it. The plastic taper is split in half and I was able to remove it. Then slide the nut off. Then the lower unit slided off. Thank you. :joyous:

All you had to do was follow the steps in my first post.--I mentioned that that tapered piece was split !
