1998 Johnson 50hp spl detent

Thanks for the post 98 Johnson 50hp spl model j50tslecc
I was on the Saginaw bay and went to push throttle forward and got really hard to push so got it home and a thing called the detent bolt fell out , it's all fix now but cant find out any info on what it actually does
so my question is what does the detent actually do on the linkage ?

I replaced the bolt made sure it was in the middle in neutral all good , What does it actually do ?

I didnt have to reorder bolt it was in the motor shroud

The detent on the block helps to get ---" quick / smooth " shifting.------Motors that are shifted too slow suffer from gear damage.----In my opinion that gearcase is not robust.
