1998 Johnson v4 90 Hp ocean runner

Looking for help if anyone is willing. I bought a javelin 366 with a 90 Hp Johnson. Ran great for 2 months. Today it started knocking loudly, then shut off and wouldn’t even turn over. I’m a rookie, but I can’t tell if this is a mechanical issue or electrical. Any idea?

Take the lower unit off...will it spin over then?

Gear failure in the lower unit is common.

Thank you for the replies. I think you may be right about the gear failure in lower unit. Two follow up questions: would this keep it from turning over? And do you know if that is an expensive repair? Thank you again.

If teeth are broken it will jam and not turn over !--------Check gear oil.----Plug should have a magnet and broken chunks of gears would be evident.-----Big money $1000 + to repair in most cases.

Wow! Ok that’s what I’ll do. After talking with you guys it does seem like it’s definitely the lower unit. Sucks, but thank you for helping me out.
