Other than the nut on the steering rod ,what else is behind the nut to keep the steering rod from flopping up and down when turned to the right? Have a new nut but it seems way to big on the inside to snug up the steering rod!

A picture of the rod would be helpful. Some steering rods have a sleeve that fits over the bolt part of the rod that lets everything move easier in the steering cable end and fills up the hole at the same time. Other wise you might need other parts .
Here is a link for a diagram of those parts.

Your s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - (115 H.P. (1998 ))
Serial No: 0G698552 Model No: 1115412UN

Parts and Service Bulletin Listing for s/n 0G698552:

Search Results - Crowley Marine

Do you have the Mercury Service Manual P/N 90-830234? If so, you will see:

Single Steering Cable and Steering Link
Rod Installation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1D-5
Installing Ride Guide Steering Cable to the
Outboard . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1D-5
Steering Link Rod Installation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1D-5

In the parts list you will see Transom Brackets depending on s/n as well as SWIVEL BRACKET AND STEERING ARM

Maybe this info will help you to better pinpoint what you require.

If you do not have the Merc Service Manual, see my message to you in Notifications at the top of the page.

You should be able to get the sleeve/bushing item 6 at a Mercury dealer, or shop the net for one. A dealer South Central Outboards near Effingham IL. deals in a lot of older outboard parts, if a dealer near you can not help. You can look them up and they are on Ebay also. Old mercs would be another place to search. If you ever come west on RT 38 south of Rockford, IL. I might be able to help find one at a dealer near me. JMO
