My merc 175 hp overheats but good flow from telltails.Poppit valve seem to be the problem. The warning horn can not be heard so a light will be installed.Does anyone know if overheating will cause the motor to shut down any spark plugs?I had some dead clyinders until it cooled off, then all were firing.I ran the motor with the thermostats removed and the flow from the telltails were the same so I think the water pump is ok.It was rebuilt 2 years ago with limited use.I have ordered new parts for the poppit valve and read of drilling a hole in the washer for flow.Any input would be helpfull.

Replace all the components you mentioned, without drilling holes , and report back. I guessing you'll be fine.

Do you have a water pressure gauge? Furture overheat problems can be easily diagnosed with one.
