Hi. I've got a 1998 27' ProLine with 1999 twin 200 hp Mercury Optimax engines. Over the last 4 years, Mercury has paid for the replacement of compressors, computers, TPI's, fuel injectors, and many, many other parts on both engines. Another compressor has just failed, and I now have had to again replace the fuel injectors at my expense, as well as several other parts and labor. I wanted to inquire if anyone else has had significant problems with their OptiMax engines. I religiously clean & flush the engines after "Every" use with fresh water & salt away, & spray the insides with corrosion guard. I've had Mr. Bruce King, Western Regional Technical Mgr on my boat & working on it on many occassions, in addition to my local authorized Mercury repair shop in Marina del Rey, CA. I'm now having to deal directly with the President's Office of Mercury in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. If anyone else is having serious problems, please let me know. This is the second set of engines on this boat as Mercury replaced the original 1998 problem OptiMax 150's with the 200's. I've got 4 years of history, & 2 1/2 inches of repairs and letters on the subject. I'm thinking about getting the new Honda 4 stroke 225 hp engines, any thoughts & recommendations would be appreciated.

Re: 1998 Merc OptiMax Major Problems

A fine woman requires alot of maintance some very High maintance. They forgot to tell you that when you bought your optimax. When they run no thing can beat them. I service this product. I like it most days but there are days I hate them. I grew up with if it's not black then send it back. I use the term baby sitting when I talk about the optimax. I baby sit alot of these engines I look at my fishing guys boats once a week. I have service the port engine and by the time I got back to the dock after a water test the starbord engine had the engine light on. There is always some thing. It's a love of labor to me. They sound like they are on the juice. Hang in there Vinney
