I have a 1998 75 hp 2 stroke Mercury with problem less than 150hrs on it. I started experineing stalling problems such as the engine woudl just cut right out. I recently took it in to a reputable Mercury repair shop and they diagnosed that it points to a stator problem since all cylinders were not recieving a spark. Although this was interiment it was recommended to changed the stator. 600$ later I recieved my boat back and again I am experiencing the same problem. I had the engine running for 30 minutes without a problem and today it ran for only 2 minutes and cut off. I could'nt get it going again. Does anyone have any ideas ? I have taken by boat back to the original repair shop for another look. Quite frankly I am very disappointed with Mercury, perhaps I should have bought a Honda. Your feedback would be much appreaciated!

Sam

stanois, you need to post this in the mercury mariner section which I'm sure it will get moved to.

My older Mercury had intermittent ignition problems, turned out to be the lower distributor assy(ignition molded into the lower distributor assy). I would look into your ignition circuit. Mine would run and then it was like someone turned the key off.

Don't forget about the keyswitch harness. If all cylinders are cutting out, there could be an issue with the stop switch circut in the harness. The plug from the engine to the boat should be clean and tight. A loose connection can cause this type of problem too.

Happy Boating! :)
