1998 Mercury water pump replacement.

Hi. I'm trying to remove the lower unit off my 1998 Mercury 8hp automatic shift and I can't fiqure out how to disconnect the shift linkage. Is it from up above???? Thanks so much.

I had the same issue when I tired to do one of my mercs myself. There is a clip at the top of the linkage that has to be released. Look on youtube for a video on it to walk you though it. On one of my mercs I had to remove the starter motor first to be able to get at the clip.
