Hello all,

About a month and a half ago our 1998 Reinell (197 BR) took on some water, we forgot to put the plug in at the ramp one day. It took on quite a bit and I believe a good part of the engine was in water, unfortunately. After being drained the boat ran okay and we went on for the rest of the day. Now after the next couple times on the water, it is running rough at idle, and sometimes won't even stay idling. I've pulled the distributor apart and all the plug wires off and everything is dry. I also pulled one of the plugs while we were at the lake, and it was black with fuel, running too rich. There has been black residue on the back of the boat and it smokes for a bit when started. I started it up on the hose and tried to change the idle mixture setting on the carb but didn't have much luck with that either. Once off idle it runs great and pulls to 4.5-5k rpm with no problem. I have been researching this alot and the only other thing I need to mention is that after the incident there is now a whining sound coming from the engine compartment. I have read alot on this forum about whining fuel pumps, could that be the culprit? I have spent hours reading on here and in my Seloc Manual and I am kind of lost as to what it could be. I have worked on many cars, dirt bikes, jet skis, etc.. but I am new to boats. ANY advice or guidance is welcome, just want to get this taken care of so I can enjoy the rest of the boating season.
Thank you
-Dean

Begin with a carb rebuild, sounds like you may have water in fuel, also check to see if choke plate is working properly, this will result in the black soot snoke and poor idle.

did the water get high enough to get into the power steering pump? On the carb, check the power valve for a damaged diaphram.

I believe the choke is working properly, I had it running out on the muffs at my house and it seemed to be operating correctly. Will I need a new fuel water separator?

I will check into the power valve on the carb also. where would that be located?

Thanks for the responses!

On the holley the power valve is located on the metering block which is located between the fuel bowl and the carb body. The block has the idle mixture screws on it too.

How far up the engine did the water go...above the starter...up to the risers motor 1/3 1/2 submerged
