Just got the dreaded call from the shop - #5 cylinder blown due to ethanol.
Now, these are his words - I haven't seen the motor nor would I recognize the problem. $3,000.00 to $3500.00 to repair.
Anyhow - could someone please shed some light on this situation as to the ethanol issue.
And with a $105.00 per hour labor rate is this price fair and within the books?
I'd trust this guy with anything - but opinions from other's are also helpful.

From what I have seen / read I think the ethanol fuel issue usually includes water in the tank that causes the alcohol to separtate. This supposidly reduces the octane of the fuel causing the fuel to run leaner and hotter causing the failure. I'm sure some more knowledgable folks can chime in.

This motor could be a pain to take apart. I see salt water use in the picture.
I would ask him to give you the compression readings off all 6 and determine if more than one cylinder needs attention. His price is about right if it will be a real professional job.

those motors cant be rebored.
they will have to replace the jugg that has the bad cylinder. plus one new piston 3 sets of rings and a gasket set.

i would get the injectors cleaned also.

those motors are desinged to run extremely lean.
because of EPA regulations.
now with the ethanol in the gas leaning it out these motors are pushed to the edge.
preignition/detonation causes these motors to fail.
