1998 volvo penta OD = 2003 OMC Cobra?

I have a 1998 Monterey with 2 4.3GL volvo pentas, SX outdrive with 1.66 gear ratio. Need to change at least one of the outdrives due to severe corrosion - my mechanic tells me a 2003 OMC Cobra SX will not fit, but I think it is the exact same outdrive - any help?

Howdy,

OMC didn't exist in 2003......so it's unlikely it would be a 2003 OMC Cobra.

I'm not even sure you could buy an OMC in 1998 either (they were basically Volvo then)

Rick - from what I have been able to read up on, I believe they did "exist" in name only - there was no company per se, but outdrives were still being built with the name - legal nightmare I think due to a bankrupcty or somehting... but I agree that the company itself was not around

This might be a question for Don then. Somewhere in the mid 90's ALL the OMC Cobra SX's WERE Volvo Penta...bolt-on interchangeable I'm told.

...even internal part numbers were all sourced from Volvo....(I'm told) but I don't know past that.

From what I've read the name hung around for quite a while.....but the I/Os didn't. My understanding is that all I/O's were Volvo after a certain year......

Find a new mechanic. There is no such thing as an OMC Cobra SX in 2003, OMC was completley out of the picture in 98. In 2001, Volvo even dumped the manual system they were using when OMC was involved in the joint venture, and they also changed the model numbers and went back to red engines instead of the dark gray.
However, the SX drives for 98 and 2003 are the exact same thing.
