1999 115 engine starts to break up at 3500 rpms

I never had a rpm issue before until yesterday. engine starts fine and idles ok and revs up to 3500 rpms with no issues,but around 3500 rpms its breaks up and the check engine light sounds and comes on. I shut the engine off and check engine light goes off and stays off and it starts up fine and goes to 3500 rpms with no problems but again breaks up after that and light comes on.if I lower rpms back to around 3500 quickly the check engine light does not come on and the engine runs fine,but again if I give it more gas it breaks up. the engine does not stall and does not go into slow mode. I haven't got a chance to hook up the laptop to it yet(its in the slip ) but plan on going down tomorrow to hook it up to see what codes it has. before I did that I thought maybe I'd see if you guys had an idea of what it might be. I have a parts engine and I could bring what ever parts you may think could cause this. I'm thinking its dropping a cylinder?? the engine is a 1999 115 evinrude ficht. thanks for any help. ~matt~

It sounds like it going into slow or the ECM may be overheating....

its not going into slow. it will still run at 3500rpms and get on plan. it breaks up and will rev to about 4500 rpms for a moment then break up and rev again. it kinda "jumps" around. I tried pumping the bulb when it was breaking up but that did not help. also if I gun it from idle it will reach 5000 rpms for a moment but then starts to break up ,then check engine sounds.

Better see what codes it has before doing anything.

Better see what codes it has before doing anything.

Well it had code 16 crank postion fault. Got a feeler and found out the sensor was off .it was at .55 from flywheel.. i put it where it belonged at .33 and all is well. No more codes .it still reads low oil pressure on screen but I pulled the return hose and it gushed out. I read it may be a sofeware glich.

Does the CPS senor have a gray or black sleeve on it ??

it has a black cover that locks it in place. all it is ,is optical eye with threads . it can be threaded into or way from flywheel. its really sensitive .it took me three tries to get it right.

The gray sleeve sensor is set at .045 to .055 ". The black sleeve sensor is set at .020 to .025 ". So set yours to the black sleeve spec. Hope this helps.

ok my manual said .33. also it is hard to tell with feeler gage because the area between the flywheel and sensor is manganic .so the feeler is always "tight" sliding through. it took me a few tries but got it right.thanks for your help boobie.

That figures. Both Seloc and Clymer SUCK !!!!! You need the OEM Factory Service Manual.
