I've read a lot of posts regarding optimax and am now sufficiently confused.

My understanding is that the optimax prior to 2000 was relatively new and had a lot of problems that were solved after 2000. True or not?

Also read that optimax is much higher tech engine than regular 2 stroke and therefore requires more maintenance. True or not?

Thanks

Re: 1999 135 Optimax

In the late 90s both the Merc Optimax and the OMC FICHT had a lot of teething problems.

Direct fuel injection (DFI) was new and unproven technology, but when it worked it worked a lot better than carbed engines. . . cleaner and more fuel efficient, rivaling 4 strokes of the day.

My understanding is that the Optis have been straightened out and are good engines. The FICHT technology was improved and now is offered in the Evinrude etec engines.

I would be suspicious of either the Optimax or FICHT engines from before 2000 until I was shown paper that indicates upgrade/update to the latest fixes.
