They're good motors, but this thing has been garaged for a few years, and the carbs, lower unit, fuel pump should be torn-down and the fuel line replaced before firing up.
Skipping the above steps is a crap-shoot.

thxs 12Footer for the reply..
the owner did a complete service at a merc dealer before he put it up for sale.also the price is right but I'm still trying to get more infos on the subject.
this one is a 2.5 liter carb.
I read somewhere on the web that these outboards(carb bluewater series) are built for heavy duty saltwater applications, are great engines BUT are killers on gas. any truth to this?? You would think that newer outboards made in the late 90's & early 2000 would be fuel efficient, right?
keep it coming guys please...

Definitly do everything 12Footer said and you should have no problem.

I think you will like the Mercury engine.

They are powerfull and strong and have a long life expectancy.

Yes, this motor might like to drink a little more gas if you continually like to run at WOT, just throttle back a little and you can expect the same as your Evinrude.

I think you will find that you will be able to achieve the same speed as the Evinrude but the RPM's will be lower at that same speed and possibly more fuel efficient.

I got 25% better fuel economy with my 135HP Merc. compared to my 130HP Johnson.

Good Luck
